PRE-SEDATION INSTRUCTIONS

● If you suffer from any medical condition or take any medicine (acute or chronic), you will need to inform me before the procedure.  A medical questionnaire has been included; please complete and return by email (or fax) at least 48 hours before the procedure.

● If you feel sick or unwell in any sense, please call me so that we can decide whether it is necessary to postpone the treatment or not.

● Please wear comfortable clothes and loose sleeves.

● Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before the procedure.

● If you need to take chronic medication – DO take it on the day of the procedure (but not Diabetic medication).

● Please arrive in good time for your appointment (at least 30 minutes beforehand); in some selected cases your doctor or dentist may feel that you will benefit from pre-medication to reduce anxiety and make you feel relaxed. If this is the case, your dentist or doctor may request that you come earlier to take this pre-medication.

● Please empty your bladder before the procedure.

● Parents or companion may remain with the patient until the sedation is underway and the surgical procedure is about to start; then they will be requested to leave the procedure room. We may invite you later on to come and have a look, please wait for us to call you to the procedure room.

POST-SEDATION INSTRUCTIONS

(AFTERCARE OF THE PATIENT):

● Please ensure that you arrange for a responsible adult to escort you home after the sedation (remain in the company of a responsible adult for the remainder of the day). Sedation will NOT be given if you arrive without an escort.

● No signing of legally binding agreements, driving or any other activities that require alertness or coordination (e.g. swimming, riding bicycles, etc.) for at least 12 hours following treatment.

● If you are taking any regular medication, ask me when you should continue to take them.

● Do not drink any alcohol for at least 12 hours following the sedation.

● The sedation may produce amnesia (loss of memory); this is temporary, sometimes lasting for a few hours.

● You should not experience nausea or vomiting after sedation; if you do feel nausea and vomit more than once or twice, please go lie down, remain still and consider contacting me.

● Do not eat or drink if you are nauseous;  you may have clear fluids when instructed to do so by me or the surgeon. If you feel fine after having clear fluids, you may then progress onto solids.

I do not anticipate you having any medical problems but should you become concerned about anything, please feel free to contact me on telephone numbers provided.

Professional Sedation Services

Introduction to Sedations

Welcome to the Sedation Services website.

Hi.  My name is Paul,  and it is my pleasure to introduce you to Professional Sedation Services.  In this practice I provide a specialized conscious sedation service for various medical and dental procedures.  This is mainly a mobile sedation service meaning that I do sedations mostly outside a hospital setting.

Conscious sedation is an alternative to general anesthetic in many selected procedures that can be done in the dentists’ or doctors’ rooms.

This website is to give both patients and practitioners more detailed information regarding procedural sedation and so help to facilitate a professional and efficient service.  Please do not hesitate to contact us for any further information you may require.

Conscious sedation is the safe administration of painkilling and anxiety-relieving medication, so that minor but painful surgical procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis or in a dental surgery. Most dental procedures and many minor medical operations can be safely and efficiently performed under sedation.
